Herniated discs are a very common spinal condition that are most often the result of acute spinal trauma or chronic spinal stress over a period of time. The spinal disc acts as a cushion between 2 spinal bones called vertebrae. When the disc is healthy, the center is composed mostly of water and the surrounding tissue is a thick cartilaginous material that keeps the disc well maintained. A healthy disc separates 2 spinal bones and does not allow any compression o the spinal nerves. As people age, the disc starts to lose water, starts to degenerate, and the outer layer begins to crack which makes it less effective as a shock absorber. This process can then allow the center of the disc to herniate through and put pressure on delicate spinal nerves. It is this pressure that causes the low back and leg pain associated with herniated discs.
